Lead Mechanical Engineer

Energy Vault

Energy Vault is the creator of renewable energy storage products that are transforming the world’s approach to utility-scale energy storage for grid resiliency. Applying conventional physics fundamentals of gravity and potential energy, the system combines an innovative crane design that lifts specially designed, massive composite blocks with a proprietary, cloud-based software platform which orchestrates the storage and discharge of electricity. Utilizing eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes at unprecedented economics, Energy Vault is accelerating the shift to a fully renewable world.

The Role

As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will head Energy Vault’s mechanical architecture and design practice. You will be a critical team member responsible for developing and maintaining the standard design of new mechanical systems to support the company’s overall energy storage goals. A great listener, you also possess the capacity to understand needs for various phases of the project, setting up workflows and attainable goals with emphasis on interoperability and testing.

As we grow as a company, you will be responsible for recruiting, training and developing a capable team including engineers and technicians for field installation, startup and test. Ideally, you will be able to work part of the time in our Westlake Village, CA office; we allow the flexibility of work-from-home days.

  • Lead the mechanical designs of complex mechanical/mechatronic systems including large mechanical weldments, electric motors, bearings, and hydraulics.
  • Take systems and subsystems from concept creation through the design process (PDR, CDR, and drawing release) and into operation.
  • Design new mechanical systems using computer aided drafting software (CAD) and finite-element-analysis packages.
  • Review and release production drawings consistent with the company standard for tolerancing and GD&T.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure requirements and design requirements are adhered to.
  • Specify and oversee subsystem reliability and high-cycle testing.
  • Oversee production/pilot unit integration, test, and activation.
  • Perform technology-oriented optimization of solutions with respect to costs, quality and delivery times.
  • Shape a culture of collaboration, innovation, constant improvement, excellence, transparency, open mindedness, humility, integrity, efficiency, joy, compassion, and fulfillment.

Candidate will possess

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • 8+ years work experience, ideally in the field of industrial process and machine design.
  • Broad experience in mechanical design CAD systems and analysis.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design standards, tolerancing and GD&T. Energy Vault, Inc
  • Understanding of international design standards (UL, CE, etc.).
  • Proven ability to perform design-for-manufacture optimization processes.
  • Basic weld design, analysis and inspection knowledge/experience.
  • Experience with special purpose machinery, bearings, couplings, motors.
  • Experience commissioning and documenting complex mechanical systems.
  • High schedule flexibility.
  • Ability to travel for vendor visits, test site support, field installation, startup, and commissioning.
  • As a team player, independence and comfort working under pressure.
