Digital Vault Sulcis

Located at Carbosulcis’ Nuraxi Figus complex in Sardinia, Italy, within the former Monte Sinni coal mine, Digital Vault Sulcis is Energy Vault’s flagship AI infrastructure campus in Europe. The project transforms a former coal mining site into a next-generation, sustainable AI hub, combining modular data center capacity with resilient energy infrastructure and renewable generation.

The site benefits from an existing 100 MW grid interconnection and integrates Energy Vault’s energy-storage technologies, including its underground gravitational energy storage system, leveraging the depth and infrastructure of the former mine.

The program starts with an Edge AI data center of approximately 30 MW, with phased expansion toward 50–60 MW of IT capacity and up to 100 MW+ of total site power capacity. The campus is designed around high-availability data center standards and a progressively carbon-free energy model, integrating solar generation, battery storage and Energy Vault’s hardware and software energy-management solutions.

In September 2026, Digital Vault Sulcis was designated by Italy’s Council of Ministers as a program of pre-eminent national strategic interest, establishing an accelerated administrative pathway for the remaining permits and approvals. The initiative supports Italy’s ambitions for digital sovereignty and AI infrastructure while contributing to the technological innovation, sustainability and industrial transformation of the Sulcis region, creating new economic value, skills and employment opportunities.
