Project Overview

Grid Resilience In ERCOT North

McMurtre BESS is Energy Vault's recently acquired battery energy storage system project in the ERCOT North market near Dallas, Texas.

At 175 MW/350 MWh, the utility-scale BESS will be able to charge and discharge continuously for up to two hours, improving grid resilience in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

The project will leverage Energy Vault's integration and EPC solutions wrapping the full suite of hardware, software, and service.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A BESS stores electricity when supply exceeds demand (or when prices are low) and releases electricity when demand increases or supply decreases. This helps balance the grid and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants.

As intermittent energy sources increase, the grid requires fast-responding flexible resources to fill power gaps and regulate the grid. The McMurtre Energy Center helps stabilize the grid, reduce congestion, and ensure reliable power delivery to homes and businesses across Texas.

Not only does the McMurtre Energy Center bring a stronger local grid reliability and resilience to Hopkins County, it also offers economic development, job creation and consistent local revenue streams. McMurtre will generate ongoing tax revenue and land lease payments which can support schools, infrastructure and public services. Energy Vault expects the project to generate 65 jobs during construction and represent a local investment of $120M in Hopkins County.

Yes. The McMurtre Energy Center is designed to meet or exceed all applicable fire, electrical, and safety standards. The system includes multiple layers of safety, including:

  • Advanced thermal management
  • Fire detection and suppression systems
  • 24/7 remote monitoring
  • Emergency response coordination with local authorities

The McMurtre project uses industry leading BESS technology that has been deployed worldwide. McMurtre uses containerized, outdoor, physically separated units designed to prevent fire propagation. Along with the BESS, Energy Vault uses its very own Energy management system (EMS) to allow for early detection, rapid isolation, and immediate response.
