Project Overview

Grid Firming Capacity

Ebor BESS is a 100 MW/870 MWh battery energy storage project located in Ebor, New South Wales, Australia.

The utility-scale BESS will provide 8 hours of dispatchable capacity, supporting the region's grid firming needs as aging coal generators retire under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. The project leverages Energy Vault's fully integrated solution stack of hardware, software, and service offerings, including its proprietary B-VAULT™ system architecture and Energy Management System. Energy Vault holds the exclusive option to acquire and construct the project, developed in partnership with Bridge Energy, and will build, own, and operate Ebor under its Asset Vault platform.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A BESS stores electricity when supply exceeds demand (or when prices are low) and releases electricity when demand increases or supply decreases. This helps balance the grid and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants.

As intermittent energy sources increase, the grid requires fast-responding flexible resources to fill power gaps and regulate the grid. The Ebor project helps stabilize the grid, reduce congestion, and ensure reliable power delivery to homes and businesses across New South Wales.

Benefits for the local Ebor community will be delivered in two ways:

  • Benefit stream 1: Payments of $2.3m ($2025) over the project's life to the New England Future Fund, administered by Armidale Regional Council (ARC). Investment Dividends will be used to fund local amenity projects. An ARC community advisory board will be convened to recommend projects to fund.
  • Benefit stream 2: Direct investment by Ebor BESS into the following projects based on feedback from the local community:
    • Installation of an EV charging station in Ebor Village to support local tourism and access to faster charging for the community ($150,000).
    • Upgrades to Ebor Town Hall ($25,000).
    • Upgrades to the Ebor Sportsground announcer box ($25,000).

Funding under benefit stream 2 represents a minimum amount Ebor BESS has committed to. These funds will be allocated prior to 1 June 2028.

Yes. The Ebor project is designed to meet or exceed all applicable fire, electrical, and safety standards. The system includes multiple layers of safety, including:

  • Advanced thermal management
  • Fire detection and suppression systems
  • 24/7 remote monitoring
  • Emergency response coordination with local authorities

The Ebor project will use Energy Vault's proprietary technology, the B-Vault. B-Vault uses containerized, outdoor, physically separated units designed to prevent fire propagation. Along with the B-Vault tech, Energy Vault uses its very own Energy management system (EMS) to allow for early detection, rapid isolation, and immediate response.
