Digital Vault Sulcis

Located at Carbosulcis' Nuraxi Figus complex in Sardinia, Italy, specifically the former Monte Sinni coal mine, where mining ceased in 2018, Digital Vault Sulcis is Energy Vault's flagship AI infrastructure campus in Europe, combining powered land, resilient energy infrastructure, and modular AI data center capacity.

In September 2026, Italy's Council of Ministers designated Digital Vault Sulcis a program of pre-eminent national strategic interest, establishing an accelerated administrative pathway for the remaining permits and approvals. The designation recognizes the project's role in advancing Italy's digital sovereignty and AI ambitions while continuing the economic redevelopment of the Sulcis region.

The program begins with an Edge AI data center of approximately 30 MW, scaling in phases toward 50–60 MW of IT capacity and up to 100 MW+ of total site power capacity. Part of the data center sits on the surface; part is installed within the mine's own underground chambers at depths of roughly 500 meters, for greater thermal stability, physical security, and resilience. An integrated on-site energy system, a photovoltaic plant, Energy Vault's B-VAULT™ battery storage, and its EV0™ gravity-based water storage system, which also supports data center cooling powers the campus.

Energy Vault is targeting construction to begin by 2028, with commercial operations expected by 2030, and will fully own and operate the site under its Build, Own & Operate model.
