Calistoga Ditches Diesel for Hybrid Hydrogen-Battery System as PG&E Eyes Scalable Clean Resilience

Energy Vault | 8 September 2025

Calistoga, California, has switched on a pioneering hybrid power system that blends six Plug Power hydrogen fuel cells with lithium-ion batteries to provide 48 hours of emergency backup power—replacing diesel generators in the wildfire-prone Napa Valley town. Developed by Energy Vault and powered by clean hydrogen, the Calistoga Resiliency Center (CRC) will maintain critical services during Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events, offering 293MWh of storage and an 8.5MW peak output via a microgrid setup managed by Energy Vault’s VaultOS™ system.
