Industrial Automation Software Engineer

Energy Vault

Energy Vault is the creator of renewable energy storage products that are transforming the world’s approach to utility-scale energy storage for grid resiliency. Applying conventional physics fundamentals of gravity and potential energy, the system combines an innovative crane design that lifts specially designed, massive composite blocks with a proprietary, cloud-based software platform which orchestrates the storage and discharge of electricity. Utilizing eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes at unprecedented economics, Energy Vault is accelerating the shift to a fully renewable world.

The Role

As Industrial Automation Software Engineer you will design and implement control programs for specific project requirements involving PLC’s, VFD motor drives, motion control, network communications, HMI’s, data collection, metric generation, and evaluation.

Ideally, you will be able to work part of the time in our Westlake Village, CA office; we allow the flexibility of work-from-home days.

you will do

  • Develop real-time control system software for automated assembly systems, including the programming of PLC’s, motor controllers, sensors and data collection systems.
  • Work with mechanical and electrical designers to ensure the control system will meet performance, reliability, and functionality requirements.
  • Perform on site commissioning and startup by demonstrating system’s capability once the equipment has been shipped to the customer’s site.
  • Design PLC programs specific to project requirements based on standard CMP programming methods.
  • Debug and commission PLC programs on representative hardware for systems integration and then onsite during installation.
  • Develop human machine interfaces (HMI) using commercially available industrial products, SCADA nodes or custom GUI’s.
  • Work with other members of the control systems design group and other functions to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals of enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost.
  • Work with project managers, designers, electricians to solve problems and provide a complete functional system.
  • Provide thorough testing of system functionality to verify PLC program completeness.
  • Provide accurate documentation for each project, informing project personnel regarding documentation and solutions to technical problems.
  • Provide documentation for training specific to the project, e.g., machine operation, programming principles, and program structure.
  • Shape a culture of collaboration, innovation, constant improvement, excellence, transparency, open mindedness, humility, integrity, efficiency, joy, compassion, and fulfillment.

Candidate will possess

  • Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • 5-7 years’ field experience in control and automation systems, controlled drive technology, field buses, HMI systems.
  • Experience in PLC programming for system control, and peripheral device integration.
  • Familiarity with international design standards (UL, CE, etc.).
  • Experience commissioning and documenting electronic systems.
  • Proficiency with multidisciplinary coordination and communication.
  • High schedule flexibility.
  • Ability to travel for vendor visits, test site support, field installation, startup, and commissioning.
  • As a team player, independence and comfort working under pressure.

  • Experience with Siemens automation systems.
  • IO-Link experience.
  • Experience with safety aspects of PLC, sensor and peripheral implementation, and integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform early phase trade studies, design, and ultimate commissioning.
  • Familiarity with Project Data Management and requirements tracking systems.
  • Competency with both VFD-based AC motor design and DC brushless motor design/generation.
  • Proven ability to produce compliance and test documentation/reports to support approved electrical system design/grid-compliant tie-in per approved standards.
  • A passion for our shared vision of carbon neutrality by 2050.
